I made this today while helping a friend on some animation. It turned out pretty cool so I thought I'd throw an FX animation post up. I used Flash, one because that's what program the guy needed me to use and two because for effects I think its easier to work with masses of color and shape then to use lines to indicate each edge and detail on something that is constantly moving and morphing around.

I pitched this idea to a producer who visited the school last spring. At the time, I really didn't have any time to put work into it, so it was just sketches mostly but he seemed to like the concept and the fact that I hadn't dedicated too much thought to a storyline. I guess that meant that he/a studio could have professional writers come up with the story which I was fine with because as long as they followed a central theme then they were probably better suited to write the stories than I was. I wonder if that guy is still interested...

Dragons and Robots

Happy New Year everybody! The other blog I participate in started the year with dragon drawings, so thus, this drawing. I thought I would also include a pic of my Warmachine warjack because I post a lot of Warmachine fanart and I'm pretty sure no one knows what I'm talking about. Basically they're these little plastic/metal figures that you and a friend maneuver on a tabletop in a sort of "war game" fashion. Its way fun and you paint your own guys so they're fun to customize. I like the Khador (red) faction because their robots have large flat areas on their armor so I can paint pin-ups on the sides.

Happy Holidays, folks. What I've drawn here is Sinterklass, who is apparently the precursor to Santa Claus and is derived from Odin. That's right, Santa is Odin. Sweet. Below Sinterklass is the Pink Masquerade, a super hero that my sister had me draw up as we watched the Christmas Story. According to her she's packin' super speed, strength, and a talent for assuming the identity of others. Oop! And apparently she's a Leaguer. (She's sitting next to me as I type).

I probably won't post again before the holidays, so I just wanted to wish all of my friends and acquaintances a very Merry Whatever-you-celebrate and say that I couldn't have hoped for such wonderful friends and family. I hope to see much more of you all in the new year.

I like muscle cars but find that I turn them into spaceships more times that not. This is because I think the idea's sweet, but probably also because when I draw wheels on these cars, the drawing becomes wonky or just loses something. Anywho, I'm trying to switch out of my Warmachine all the time phase and get into some futurism for a while. I'm thinking about doing the interior of this guy and see where I go from there.

I drew this for my dad's birthday a couple weeks back. He's a hard man to shop for so when he has whims that he lets us know about my family kinda sticks to a theme. He let us know that he wants a motorcycle when he retires so he can cruise around with my mom on the back. We were going to get him a helmet, but even those are expensive, so I drew him something to daydream on. I hope he likes it. Happy Birthday Dad.

The cat was a last minute add on but I think its one of my favorite parts. Me being an animal person and an apartment person, the cat is the natural choice. I told my sister that its name would be Milo if its a male and Killswitch S. Esquire III if she's female. Oh and yes, that's a firepole.

It's the Green Hornet! This guy's pretty cool and in a recent attempt to escape my allegies, I hid in a Barnes and Noble and ended up reading the new comic which is written by Kevin Smith (who's films and podcast are excellent). Obviously this guy is as old school as you can get and I'm sure had influences on things like Dick Tracy, the Spirit, and I'm guessing Batman. I'm thinking this might end up being a Halloween costume this year.

Little Wonder Woman fan art. I looked into her creator, a man named Willaim Moulton Marston because I knew that he also created the lie detector (which is neat considering the effect of WW's lasso of truth is to make anyone ensnared tell the truth). What I didn't know was that she is based heavily on the two women that Marston was in a polyamorious relationship with. The guy who created Wonder Woman was living with and dating two women at once! And it was out of great respect for the female gender and for those two women that he modeled Wonder Woman. Who knew?

We had a producer come to the school from Nelvana and the year was challenged to come up with some ideas for shows we'd throw at him. Three people were picked at random and I was picked. I presented Annok, a barbarian who travels an American future that has fallen in to anarchy and ruled by corporations and the internet. He's got a red muscle car, a quirky sidekick and a hot mechanic. It was a fun idea that drew from old cartoons that I like and it was received well.

Here's some examples of my life drawing. I admit, I'm not big on life drawing but I was delighted this year to find that it was much more flexible. In fourth year all the models are clothed and the emphasis is on storytelling and composition. It got to the point that the teacher Geordie (I'm going to find out his full name and spelling) told me to stick to red pencil sketches, its what I'm good at he said, go with that.

Hey loyal blog readers, just checkin' in. For those who care, the film is going well I've got all of my backgrounds on paper and their getting details next. Hopefully that means that layouts will be detailed, cleaned and maybe painted by the end of the month. Personally, I'd love to get to animation, this thing is going to be way too fun to do. Anyway, the top picture here is the opening shot of my film which will have lightning and thunder and be very very dramatic. The rest of this stuff is just random sketches that I do here and there throughout my day. Most are rpg characters, women, plans for future animations, ladies, robots, girls and this last one is something that popped into my head and makes me smile every time I see it.

4th Year!

Wow, I just realized that this is it. The last time round the block here at Sheridan. Weird. So for any who don't know, the senior year at Sheridan is put towards creating a short film all on your own...and towards four breadth electives. After the rage inducing lesson in group work that is 3rd year, most come back after a summer coop refreshed and eager to work on a project that doesn't involve getting ideas past a committee. Although we're put in mentor groups with ten other students and receive feedback, if we have a vision this year we can stick to it. But that's probably a bad idea. Anyways, for my senior thesis I'm doing a Nazi-smashing epic with an all American hero aboard an evil zeppelin fortress! Here's two versions of the leica and an early run cycle of the main character.

Experimental Animation

Guess what kind of senior thesis film I'm making? One with 'splosions! These are some tests on what works and what doesn't as far as animation explosions, ricochets, and gunshots. I'm curious how this transitions to traditional animation and I may end up having Flash elements in my film when it comes to these effects. Its really easy to work with the organic nature of the explosions when you're working straight ahead and in color. For anybody who's curious about the process, its 10% explosion and 90% smoke and follow thru.

When I draw the ladies I never seem to know what to draw them doing. I've been taking in a lot of Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers stuff lately and those old movie and posters always have these warrior women on Venus or Mars. I thought Lady Fight Planet would be sweet. This turned out to be one of the most complete pieces (and yeah, I'm gonna call this a piece) I've ever done.

Ok obviously a Chris Sanders style girl, but let me explain. It was supposed to be Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, only when Jen and I were talking the other day I told her how cool it would be if during the part when Gantu kidnaps her and Stitch and Stitch gets away if Gantu had just flown off into space with Lilo in tow. Then when discovering this, he leaves her at a space port or something and she becomes this intergalactic bounty hunter surfer girl. Then Jen added that she should hunt down Gantu and wear his skin like a cloak with his shark head as the hood. So when I started this drawing it was Lilo with guns and silly space junk and it just turned into this drawing because I'm not normally decent when drawing the ladies and this turned out pretty ok, if a little straight from the pages of a Sanders art book.

Messing around with clean up in Illustrator and Flash this week. I'm to practice with vectorized lines, which means that the computer makes sure the line edge doesn't pixelize and stays smooth. Its a real pain in the butt, but it looks nice. Anyway, I drew this while watching Silverado. This guy's walking into a trap for sure.

After watching Waterworld and Road Warrior this week, I've felt the need to play some Fallout 3. However, I don't have my computer here so I can't and I probably shouldn't because I'm in LA and I should get the most out of this trip. What I can do is do some pseudo-fan art. If you look carefully you can see elements of Fallout, Warhammer 40k, Road Warrior, and just a touch of Incursion which shows just how covered the topic of dystopian futures in the nerd community. Also, as a last though, I preferred Waterworld.

For those of you who are curious we've FINALLY begun production on Beat Appetit and it will be an nail biting race with time to see if we can pull this off. Also (because I haven't been on here in a while) I've secured an internship at a little place called Six Point Harness in LA (http://www.sixpointharness.com/). Which is awesome and something else I have to plan so we'll see how that goes. Finally, in story class we've started cobbling together ideas for fourth year and I've already scrapped my first so here's the concept piece for the one I've going with.

Hey all. Been busy with the film (which is on the edge of actual production finally) and the application process for the summer internships which is a little insane. Along with this stuff we've started working on story ideas for fourth year already. What? With all you're already doing? Well, yeah but I'm actually really relieved to be drawing something that's not a chef and something I don't have to run by a committee. Here's what I've come up with, I won't tell what the story idea is but everybody can just guess what I'm working on.

Anvils are Classic?

This is something I've been working on when I have down time. For long time viewers, you may notice that this is very similar to my Weight Lift assignment from second year. What can I say, I like the character and I like the idea. I'm curious what started the whole anvil thing and all Wikipedia could tell me is that it is "the epitome of a heavy and clumsy object". I've seen other things used, but the anvil seems to be the mainstay of heavy dropped things. Why not a rock? Rocks seem big and heavy and much easier to come by. Prospective Students are Funny Lookin'

Tuesday I had to attend the Metro College Fair in Toronto for the school (because I work there). Had to be to the school at 6:30 to take the bus there, in short, not a happy Johnny. But after two cups of coffee and a few questions about my program I decided there was one too many funny headshapes not to be drawing the masses around me....while working of course. These are the results. Also, Curry's didn't have blue pencils so I've been working in purple and it just carried over to Photoshop.

Johnny's Doing a Group Film....and Drawing Bearded Men

So, like I mentioned in the kitchen post, I am spending my third year at Sheridan College working on a group film with 11 of my fellow students. How does that work? Well for anyone who reads this who isn't doing (or has done) a film, I'll explain. My class (2011) is and has been split into 5 classes and what the teachers did was have us put down what we think our strongest point is. Personally, I put animation and layout (which may or may not be true) and then everyone decides what they do best. This way each group theoretically has an equal amount of enthusiastic people for each area of animation. So in the end, each class has two groups with ten groups total for my year. Pretty nifty right? And my group has decided to do a film about chefs and refinding their passion for their craft. The ideas are pretty cool. This is my pass at the story (in rough thumbnail form), an interior study, and a man with a sweet beard.

A kitchen I drew and painted for my groups film. Its cool, drab, and grungy feeling is supposed to contrast the bright, happy feel we want to develop later on. The story obviously involves chefs in a kitchen who rediscover their passion for cooking by getting into a beat/rhythm and sticking it to their overbearing manager. I suggested an Old Man Spoon-Playing Spirit, but nobody went for it. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Man, they had crazy ideas in the 80's and one that I've recently discovered and fallen in love with is that of Thundarr the Barbarian. He's a barbarian...in the future! Cool stuff.

Summer time tunes

Hey everybody. With the start of summer also brings the horrible boredom that comes with it. However, this year I have vowed to stay busy and productive. Of course there's work and this year to keep me busy I signed up for an Animating to Music course at the school taught by the always delightful Mark Mayerson. Its already proving challenging as music is complicated and something I haven't had experience with since 8th grade. So we'll see how it goes. I'm excited still because if it does work, animation to music is always a treat. Here's the character I'll be working with and for those of you who are curious I'm using a piece of a jazz tune called "Django" by the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Whoo! The semester is finished and the grades are in. Its a weird feeling, not having another wave of stuff to do but I'm sure I'll grow to enjoy it soon enough. So, without further adieu, these are my last second year animations and my final layout assignment.

Hello again! Today's post includes what we've been covering in my Digital Methods class: Maya! I won't show the bowl of fruit and snowman we had to do to learn all the tools but the hard surface object and human hand are here for your enjoyment. For those of you who are wondering, that's a '59 Thunderbird with jet engines and a wicked taxi paint job. The next assignment is a character which is pretty exciting but I don't get to animate in the 3D realm until 3rd year. I have to say that I'm excited because modeling is fun and I look forward to applying what I've learned about animation to the computer. Coming Soon! Angry animated chipmunk! Stay tuned.

So, with the semester half done we are granted a "break week" which means we can catch up on assignments we're behind on and for those of us that like to get a head start on things to begin work on the next wave of homework. This also means that I have an extra couple minutes to update with the stuff I've been working on. I apologize that the full body sync is so dark.

Hey loyal Blog readers. It is the habit of every art student or professional I know to apologize every time they take a long interval to update their work. I find that reassuring because I feel like I do that a lot so it gives me a twisted sense of belonging. Anywho, I've been super busy yadda yadda, sorry I haven't updated. In my defense we've started using sound for lip syncs in my classes and the sound files and Blogger aren't getting along so I couldn't put anything up. But heres my layout for a pan we have to do. The actual layout is like 45 inches long which was different to work on and it definately turned out.

So the new year's here, the new semester has started along with the insanity that comes along with it and the new president is in office. I'm not really a huge politics guy but its pretty impressive to see as many Canadians as I did watching Obama take office. That was a world event. But I get back to the random drawings that I've collected in the New Year. Blogger doesn't want to cooperate today so I'll have to explain each and hope you find them. Any drawings with cats are related to my storyboarding class where the first assignment is to board a scene to music lyrics. Its actually nice because its basically all there for you to do, you just have to draw it out. Lets see, the kid is a random drawing of the great length you'd have to go through to play as a Spartan. No wonder everyone likes pirates, its just simplier. The camel and chicken are for my animation/character design class so if I stick with it all my loyal blogees will get to see those guys move and talk. Last is the hardest to explain. Its a guy in his underwear playing ping pong. It was a really random idea that I have for the third year films where the guy and his roommate are pro ping pongers and they play ping pong while going about their daily activities. Its not really a story, but the idea entertains me. If anybody's got suggestions I love to hear from friends and random blog readers.

Walk/Run

This is the latest assignment which is a walk/run. Basically we need to show one character walking, one character running and some two character interaction. I like the chewing.

Well, you can't. Or at least I can't. But i wanted to do a cool multilayer layout/painting and this is what I ended up with. Also with this post is my caricature done by the wonderfully talented and ever popular Pete Emslie who teaches character design at Sheridan. So this is the second assignment of second year at Sheridan, the weight lift and toss. I'm happy with it and not so happy with it. The important thing is that I took away some lessons from this so the next one will be even better. Also, this character is what I'm being for Halloween. On that note, Happy Halloween!

T-Shirts and Nerds

Thanksgiving Blog Dump.

So, I go to school in Canada and they for some strange reason celebrate Thanksgiving today, in October, instead of in November. They think it makes sense, I don't get it but hey I still got fed (thanks to Jon Coit's wonderful mother). Anyways, I mention this because this is the fourth post I've put up today and its only because I have a break for which to do so. So, dearest readers, don't think I've abandoned you. I'm just tres busy. But here is the Wave/Boat/Sack assignment which is my bold first step into second year Animation here at Sheridan College.

Ok, so the first two are kinda random drawings. The croc man was an idea for a comic book with pirates that a friend of mine wanted to do. Maybe next summer. The woman is that Jedi with the two tails growing from her head. She's cool so I drew her to practice women. The next two are kinda relevant to my school work. The first is a set of thumbnails for a castle. Thus far, second year Layout class should just be called "The Happy Thumbnailing Class" cuz that's all we've done. And to add to the fun that is that class, I when in a totally different direction with this project so these thumbnails are moot. But I still like them, so here. Lastly is my villian character. He lifts an anvil in my Weight Lift/Toss assignment (coming soon) and is what I'm going trick-or-treating as this Halloween. Should be fun on both accounts.

PS-Anvils are hard to draw.

Two Posts in One Day? INSANITY!

I know, its nuts. What's even crazier is this is actually going to be 2 of 3 cuz I'm uploading so much stuff it won't all fit in 2 posts! AHHHHH! So these drawings are for the walk/run assignment that will be coming after the Weight Lift and Toss. You may ask, "Johnny, you charming fellow you, why have you already put thought into this when you've only just finished the last assignment?" Cuz I'm crazy, that's why. Basically, the girl is like a space ranger (or space rangAR.....Toy Story) and the alien is kind of a cross between a pro wrestler and big foot.

So the drawing is a "header" that was supposed to go in front of all of our animations when they were screened but I think it only happened the first couple times. Oh well. Also I'm posting my hyena walk cycle and my Captain Amelia head rotation and meow (which are both from first year).
